This is the official statement of Redskins general manager Bruce Allen on recent media reports of an adjusted salary cap for the 2012 season:
“The Washington Redskins have received no written documentation from the NFL concerning adjustments to the team salary cap in 2012 as reported in various media outlets. Every contract entered into by the club during the applicable periods complied with the 2010 and 2011 collective bargaining agreements and, in fact, were approved by the NFL commissioner’s office. We look forward to free agency, the draft and the coming football season.”

As a fan for over 50 years, I’m so happy to see this statement from Bruce Allen! I would never think that the Redskin organization would be involved in something like this.
I’m looking forward to free agency tomorrow, and to get the players to help us return to our glory years! HTTR!!

Kind of worries me that he qualifies “written documentation.” The reports seem to indicate this happened in person at a number of owner meetings. I hope we get a more complete response by tomorrow.

I’m hoping this was just a bad report. Regardless, the Skins need to fight this. If the NFL approved the deals, they have no business trying to penalize the Skins now. And if this report is true – Is anybody beside me irked by the timing of the announcement? If they were going to penalized folks for bad contracts in 2010 and 2011, they should have provided notice way before now…not 24 hours before Free Agency.

Lawyer up! If the NFL can show written rules regarding this issue they can feel free to take away the cap space. Until then, over my dead body.

I love how the league tells the other 30 teams to accept the penalty of the Redskins/Cowboys or we’ll lower the cap by $10M for the upcoming season. Duh. Goodell needs to go.

Appreciate Bruce Allen clarifying situation for us. It didn’t make any sense to impose this penalty when there wasn’t a cap and it absolutely didn’t make sense to have this levied the day before free agency started and a year and half after the contracts in question were agreed to by everyone, including the NFL. I’ll sleep better tonight. Go Skins!!!!!

This whole situation is B.S. 1st of all this was under a different GM and coach 2nd we have already been penalizrd enough by Haynesworthless 3rd DeAnegelo Hall the other so called key person in this is hardly a stud player. Cowbiys still have Miles Austin under the same GM and he is a key part to their team however this is one time where the Skins Snyder and the Boys Jones need to pull together and get an injunction to halt free agency and take it to the courts. They clearly did not violate any policy and if they did then why didnt the league say something in 2010 when this happened?? They approved all of the transactions. TOTAL B.S. and the NFL front office should have all of their salaries cut for allowing it to happen in the 1st place. Where is the accountability there??

The NFL had no problem with money issues two years ago but now they do? Really? Who keeps their books? This is bogus crap by a horrible commish. He needs to go! Its funny how the NFL drops this the day before free agency starts. If there was no written documentation in 2010 then there was no wrong doing. I say lets get our lawyers involved and fight this bull.

I am proud of Allen releasing this statement and would hop they would take legal action against the league if the league wants to do this. If what is reported from Shefter is true, to do this at this point in time would only confirm the negative bias Goddell has towards the Redskins. If you are going to mess with millions of dollars from one team and distribute it to the rest because you do not feel something that happened a couple of years ago was not fair, but the Skins followed all written guidelines. There are serious problems in the leadership of the NFL(King GODell). So I guess King GODell could decide the Patriots have to many draft picks and they should be taken away and divided up between the rest of the league. Just to even things up. But he would not think of it since Kraft is a good friend. King GODell turned his back during Spygate and knew about the tapings over a year before the Jets blew the whistle, then destroyed the evidence. Oh, and lets not forget King GODell also knew about bountygate in 2009 and let it continue until Gregg Williams left the Saints. Maybe he wanted the Saints to win the SB???? GODell stinks like that roadkill skunk down the street. He is destroying the integrity of the game. Is this Goddell and the NFL or Vince and the WWE.

Exactly, I was all approved by godell himself. So he approves what happened, and then punishes them for it? What a corrupt commissioner. I really hope the redskins and cowboys don’t let him get away with this. Plus over spending to one team, may not be over spending to another. Especially is it Dan Snyder and jerry jones. Was there a limit to what they could spend? No there wasn’t. Take it to court!!!!

Let me get this straight – the ‘skins are being penalized because the followed all the rules but refused to abide by a secret agreement to limit spending during the uncapped year. In other words, they refused to illegally collude with the other owners in a clear violation of anti-trust law.
So they’re being punished for refusing to break the law.
I get that the union didn’t want to pick at old wounds but this is absurd. There has got to be some legal redress.

So what…………The REDSKINS secure an injunction to prevent the NFL from implementing the cap restrictions while they spend the full 40 million on FA players?
It is obvious tro everyone that the timing was strictly punative.
In my mind, I think it the opening salvo to run DAN SNYDER out of the NFL.

The league will wait until the 11th hour, so that the legal beagles won’t have time to file some type of challenge on behalf of the two teams that would delay the FA frenzy.
Also, there are several other teams that did the same thing:
Hou Schaub
KC T. Jackson
Chi J. Peppers
SF M. Crabtree
NO J. Evans
GB G. Jennings & R. Pickett
Det K. V. Bosch
and Phi J. Peters

As a long suffering redskins fan I should be used to this roller coaster ride. After all the excitement over the trade for the number 2 pick now we get a stomach punch. How do you get yourself in such a ridiculous position? Somebody should lose their job over this. Too bad it can’t be Daniel Snyder. I gave up my season tickets two years ago out of frustration over poor management, but my heart will not let me stop playing the fool for this team. However, this is almot the last straw.

If this fine is carried out it. There will be no reason to even watch the Redskins play for at least the next four years. We traded away the draft pick we would get from losing to everybody who is able to spend more money on thier players. As much as I love the Redskins It would break my heart to watch them when there was now chance of winning. I will be done with football, until we are finally on an even feild again. We where finally turning it around. +

What happened was the NFL warned each team that since 2010 was a uncapped year, that teams should not front load contracts in 2012 to circumvent the salary cap. The cap is based on competitive fairness for all 32 teams. Teams were warned that the league was not sure what the cap would be after a CBA was agreed to so tread carefully as not not find yourselves over the limit in the event the cap was lowered. The warning not to front load in 2012 was supported by the owner.
Well, that is exactly what the Skins did. Thats the only way that they were looking at being $40 mil under the cap. If the skins would have followed the warning and structured the contracts as they normally do, they would probably be at $15-$20 million under the cap. They are I think between $20-$25 mil now.
Since it was an uncapped year, The Nfl had no choice but to approve the contract presented. However, it was up to the individual teams to ensure that they were in compliance with the warning from the league. The Redskins basically blew the league off, and now claim that they didnt receive anything in writing….Not that Allen does not say he never recieved any notice from the NFL….he phased it to say that he never received anything in “writing”.
We got caught…time to allocate the loss and move on…….We got RGIII and now Piere Garcon……way on the way to a huge improvement……
We got to face it, it was gamemenship and they knew it. They got busted. Had

Mr. Sndyer and Mr. Allen, I have blogged Sally Jenkins( the knee jerk reporter from the Washington Post) who wrote the Article putting the blame on you ,instead of where the blame really belongs (all the cheap owners who wanted you not to bid on players thus ,getting them for a reduced price) Let’s face the facts V.Jackson, Ben Grubbs, Carl Nicks ,Eddie Royal etc… would have all gotten bigger contracts either from the Redskins or the teams that they signed with ,if the Skins had the $$ free agency they legal were intitiled to by the NFL office. As Rodger Goodell gave in to all the owners who never spend money( and The NFL Players Assc that could not see the precendant that they just allowed , and could only see the overall $$$) were looking for a less than fair market system (meaning keep the Skins out of Free agency ,and we get who we want at 25% off ) Please stand up in Court and go Al Davis on them! The NFL can’t say one thing is ok one day ,and then change their minds by being minipulated by those same cheap owners that had some cap space and wanted you out of the race! Stand up for all Skins fans, by taking this to court ,or they will continue to push us around, then laugh in our faces. Thank you
